ADS on the Tifton Campus

Located 200 miles and 3.5 hours south of Athens, GA, the University of Georgia Animal and Dairy Science Research farm at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, GA, has over 611 acres of usable land dedicated to livestock nutrition, forage management, and sustainable practices within the beef industry. The acreage on the farm is dedicated to pasture, hay/baleage, and silage production of high-quality livestock feed utilized in the daily operations and maintaining the beef herd. Much of the acreage is dedicated to perennial warm-season forage production (bermudagrass and bahiagrass), legumes (Alfalfa and annual clovers), and annual warm and cool-season forage used for limit grazing and as grazeable cover crops (i.e., annual ryegrass, small grains, brassicas, millets, sorghums, and crabgrass). The beef cattle center is comprised of both registered and commercial herds of beef cattle, maintained on the Tifton farm as well as at the nearby University of Georgia Alapaha Range Center in Alapaha, GA. Herds are split for multiple uses across the station by calving season, having both fall and spring calving programs for research purposes. This location also has an animal nutrition laboratory that includes drying ovens and forage grinders to process samples for analysis and the necessary equipment to provide complete nutritional analysis of feed and forage via wet chemistry and NIRS technologies. Additional facilities and resources in Tifton include a 24-pen feeding barn, a free-stall barn in transition to a feedlot facility, replicated grazing paddocks, and irrigation used for nutrient management and high-quality forage production.

Additionally, the UGA-Tifton Campus Animal and Dairy Science farm is home to the Better Grazing Program Southern Location. The BGP is located off Carpenter Road in Tifton, GA next to the Black Shank Pavilion. This 40-acre area includes replicated grazing paddocks that highlight alternative permanent and temporary fencing/water/shade system technologies. This premier grazing location has a built-in lane system and a working facility equipped with weigh box, electronic scales, working chute, and sorting pens for easy cattle handling and movement. This location serves as a research and Extension demonstration location to provide a hands-on real-life visual highlighting new technologies in grazing management and is an excellent collaboration between the university and industry
