Youth Programs
The Animal and Dairy Science Department is dedicated to showing young people the full potential of our undergraduate program. We offer youth programs throughout the year to help support his mission.
Animal Science in Action
Animal Science in Action is a two-day program designed for rising high school juniors and seniors interested in science and careers in animal science. Participants engage in a series of laboratory experiments and visit each of the college's main teaching farms for hands-on activities with beef and dairy cattle, horses, swine, and sheep. Current CAES animal and dairy science students help lead the program. This year's program was held on June 3-4, 2024 and was a great success.
UGA Beef Team - Youth Programs
Georgia Elite Stockman
July 15-17, 2024, we launched the Georgia Elite Stockman program thanks to the generous support of the Georgia Beef Commission, Certified Angus Beef, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. This initiative provided 21 students, aged 14-21, with a three-day immersive “hoof-to-plate” experience in the beef cattle industry. Through unique hands-on activities, trainings, and seminars, we equipped the next generation of industry leaders with knowledge to advocate for the industry both on and off the farm.
Top Hand Stockmanship & Stewardship Contest Series
This spring, we hosted our third Top Hand Stockmanship and Stewardship contest series to educate and equip Georgia’s youth (8th-12th grade) with skills and knowledge for the beef industry. The UGA Beef Team and Georgia Cattlemen’s Association collaborated with cattle producers and UGA Research/Teaching herds across Georgia. We held four regional contests in April (Tifton, Athens, Carrollton, Summerville) and the state contest in May at Rocky Hill Ranch, with 45 students across 15 teams participating.
