Outstanding Early Career Animal Scientist Award

Dr. Pedro Fontes is the recipient of the American Society of Animal Science Southern Section Outstanding Early Career Animal Scientist Award—Research, presented during the 2024 Southern Section Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. Pedro Fontes is an Assistant Professor in beef cattle reproductive physiology at the University of Georgia’s Department of Animal and Dairy Science. He obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Sao Paulo State University, his M.S. in Animal Science from the University of Florida, and his Ph.D. in Physiology of Reproduction from Texas A&M University. Currently, Dr. Fontes’ research and Extension program focuses on improving cattle reproductive efficiency through the improvement of assisted reproductive technologies and development of reproductive management strategies that maximize profitability in beef production systems. His leadership in applied beef cattle reproduction has resulted in invitations to speak at over 130 local, national, and international events. As additional concrete examples of Dr. Fontes’ accomplishments in his short career, he has authored/co-authored 35 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 2 book chapters, 58 peer-reviewed abstracts, and 56 extension and popular publications. Moreover, his program secured more than 1.7 million dollars in funding.

The Outstanding Early Career Animal Scientist Award—Research recognizes outstanding achievements by early career scientists in the area of research activity. This award is sponsored by the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science.


Celebrating Recent Grant Successes!

Dr. Franklin West was recently awarded a $4,033,334 grant from Northeastern University and the Department of Defense to continue his research on Evaluating the Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation on Neural Network Electrical Signaling, Cellular Kinetics, and Function.

As part of the Regenerative Bioscience Center, Dr. West and his colleagues, Dr. Marklein and Dr. Call, were awarded a $3,617,366 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to continue their research on Defining the mechanisms of MSC extracellular vesicle modulation of microglia metabolism and bioenergetics in traumatic brain injury recovery (TBI).
